Musée de La Poste – Postal History & Philately in Montparnasse

Summary

Dive into six centuries of postal history, stamps, and interactive stories in the heart of Montparnasse.

Description

The Musée de La Poste, located steps from Montparnasse station, is the vibrant memorial of French postal history, housed in a brutalist building inaugurated in 1973 and revamped in 2019 for increased accessibility and natural light . Its sculpted façade is emblematic, even featured on a commemorative stamp issued for its reopening.

The museum’s three-floor itinerary, centered around a dramatic 20‑m glass tower, charts postal routes, professions, and stamp artistry. Permanent exhibits showcase over one million philatelic and visual items: 37 ,000 artifacts including uniforms, cancellation machines like the 1884 Daguin, mailboxes, miniature postal vehicles, writing instruments, posters, postcards, and mail art. The museum also holds official archives on French, Andorran, and overseas stamps.

Temporary exhibitions like “La fabrique du Temps” (until Nov 3, 2025) and “S’affranchir – Le poids des mots” (through 2026) provide thematic depth. Hands-on workshops (tie‑dye, brick‑modeling façades) and guided tours or storytelling sessions (every other Saturday) offer immersive experiences.

With a family‑friendly and interactive atmosphere, children as young as 3 can learn about stamp engraving, explore activity booklets, and engage with the life of postal workers on bicycles or postal wagons. Visitors range from families, philatelists, students, to heritage enthusiasts and cultural tourists.

Curious highlights include a postal wagon model, a Minitel, a 1902 payment voucher, postal scales, cancellation machines, and quirky items like a cornette-style postal uniform. Notable are visual archives: 17 ,000 postcards and 8 ,200 prints.
