Square Saint-Éloi – a green oasis and playground in the 12th arrondissement

Summary

A family-friendly green oasis with its iconic mosaic whale, just steps from Montgallet metro.

Description

Square Saint-Éloi, created in 1974 as part of the urban renewal of the Saint‑Éloi block (1968–1977), stands on the former site of the Mathurine convent and artisanal workshops. Expanded in 1982 and 2007 to cover 10 309 m², it now offers a green retreat in Paris’s 12th arrondissement.

The star feature is the mosaic-covered blue whale fountain by Michel Le Corre and Gabrielle Bréchon, installed in 1982. Surrounding gardens include a small wooden bridge, decorative boats filled with flowers, and lush foliage like Italian poplars, Atlas cedars, maples, and a weeping willow that create a tranquil setting.

Popular with families and locals, the square features playgrounds, sandbox, ping-pong tables, sports court (basketball/football/handball), accessible lawns, and benches. Leashed dogs are allowed on main paths. Public restroom facilities and drinking fountains are on site, though no baby-changing stations.

An EcoGarden and QualiParis certified site, the square benefits from eco-friendly maintenance, biodiversity awareness, and low-consumption lighting. Seasonal maintenance like misting systems may temporarily restrict access.

Cultural activity: the Bibliothèque Saint‑Éloi outreach team hosts summer reading sessions every Wednesday morning.

Atmosphere & visitors: a friendly, peaceful oasis visited by locals, joggers, parents with children, and tourists seeking a city break. The ambiance is serene, punctuated by children’s laughter and bird song. Art lovers appreciate the mosaic art set in an urban natural landscape.

Fun facts:

The square replaced a 19th-century artisanal neighborhood with 1970s modernist architecture.

Named after Saint Éloi, patron of metalworkers, reflecting the adjacent metallic church.

The whale fountain underwent mosaic restoration in 2012.
