The Paris Catacombs

Summary

Descend into a haunting underground labyrinth beneath Paris where the remains of millions of Parisians rest.

Description

The Paris Catacombs, first opened in 1809, form a vast underground ossuary 20 m beneath Place Denfert‑Rochereau in former limestone quarries. They contain the remains of over six million Parisians, transferred after cemetery overcrowding and the collapse of the Innocents’ Cemetery at the end of the 18ᵗʰ century.

The one-way, 1.5 km tour begins with 131 steps down, passes through narrow, dimly lit tunnels, and climbs 112 steps to exit at 21 bis Avenue René‑Coty. A constant 14 °C and humid climate calls for warm clothing and sturdy footwear.

Visitors explore walls of bones artistically stacked in geometric patterns, discover inscriptions and carvings by quarrymen like Decuré, and see curiosities such as the “Samaritan Fountain,” once home to fish. A chilling anecdote: some skulls have mysteriously disappeared over the years, taken as souvenirs by early visitors.

This immersive experience attracts a diverse audience—history buffs, thrill seekers, art and architecture students, and families with teens. Special guided tours are held occasionally (First Empire themes, nighttime visits, Heritage Days).
